Blackburn Rovers coach Michael O’Neill has explained why Ryan Alebiosu is unlikely to be moved further forward despite the Nigerian defender’s attacking qualities.
Alebiosu has impressed since establishing himself as Blackburn’s first choice right back, with his pace and ability to carry the ball making him a useful outlet on the right side.
His performances have led to questions about whether he could be pushed into a more attacking role, especially with his ability to contribute in the final third.
O’Neill, however, believes that changing Alebiosu’s position would take away some of his biggest strengths.
“I get asked all the time, can we push Alebiosu up one more, play him as a right winger?” O’Neill said.
The Blackburn boss admitted that the option is possible but believes the team would lose something important by doing so.
Alebiosu’s ability to defend, recover quickly and carry the ball from deeper positions makes him more valuable as a full back, according to O’Neill.
The 24 year old has also shown that he can influence matches from defence without needing to operate as a winger.
Born in England to Nigerian parents, Alebiosu represents the Super Eagles at international level. He came through the Arsenal academy before gaining senior experience with Crewe Alexandra, Kilmarnock, Kortrijk and St Mirren.
He joined Blackburn from Belgian club Kortrijk in 2025 and has since become an important player for the Championship side.
O’Neill appears keen to keep Alebiosu in the position where he believes the defender can have the biggest impact.
Rather than turning him into a winger, Blackburn want to continue getting the best from his attacking qualities while keeping his defensive responsibilities intact.
