Sporting CP youngster David Makinde could soon find himself at the centre of an international battle involving Nigeria, Brazil and Portugal.
The highly-rated striker is eligible to represent all three countries and is already attracting attention because of his rapid progress in Portugal. Born in Brazil to a Nigerian father, Makinde also qualifies for Portugal after spending several years in the country.
At just 15, the young forward is regarded as one of the brightest talents coming through Sporting CP’s academy. He currently plays for the club’s youth teams and recently continued his impressive form by getting on the scoresheet in a league match.
Reports suggest Portuguese football authorities have already taken steps that could make him available for their youth national teams in the future. That development has increased competition for a player many believe has a bright future ahead of him.
The Nigeria Football Federation has in recent years shown greater interest in securing talented dual-national players before they commit to other countries. With Makinde’s Nigerian roots coming through his father, the Super Eagles could eventually become an option if his development continues in the right direction.
Brazil also remain in the race. The South American giants have a long history of producing top strikers and Makinde’s birthplace means he is eligible to represent the five-time world champions.
But if he continues to impress and fulfills his potential, a major international decision could be waiting for him in the coming years. Nigeria, Brazil and Portugal will all hope the talented youngster eventually chooses their colors when the time comes.
