Brighton youngster Zadok Yohanna is set to miss out on Nigeria’s squad for this month’s AFCON qualifiers after suffering an injury setback.

The 19-year-old winger had been tipped as one of the fresh faces that could receive an invitation from Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle following his impressive start to life in England. However, that opportunity now appears unlikely after Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler confirmed the player is currently unavailable.

Yohanna has missed Brighton’s recent matches and was not included in the squad for games against Chelsea and Leeds United. Speaking about the youngster’s situation, Hurzeler explained that the winger is dealing with a fitness issue and will need time to recover before returning to action.

The injury is a frustrating setback for the former AIK player, who completed a move to Brighton during the summer and quickly attracted attention with his performances. He made his Premier League debut earlier this season and was seen as a strong candidate for a first competitive appearance with the Super Eagles.

Nigeria are preparing for AFCON qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau later this month, with Chelle expected to announce his squad soon. Yohanna’s injury means the coach may have to look elsewhere for attacking options.

Despite the disappointment, the teenager remains one of Nigeria’s brightest prospects abroad. His progress at Brighton has been closely monitored by Nigerian football fans, and many believe his chance with the national team will come once he returns to full fitness.

Yohanna’s focus will be on recovery as he works towards getting back on the pitch and continuing his development in the Premier League. Once fit again, he is expected to remain firmly on the Super Eagles radar.
