Why Michael Kayode Chose Italy U-21 Over Super Eagles – Olympic Champion Explains

An Olympic gold medallist, Emmanuel Babayaro, has shed light on why talented defender Michael Kayode chose to represent Italy U-21 instead of committing to the Nigeria national football team.

Kayode, who has been on the radar of Nigerian football authorities, recently opted to continue his international development with Italy at youth level a decision that has sparked debate among fans.

According to Babayaro, the choice is largely strategic rather than a complete rejection of Nigeria. He explained that players in Kayode’s position often prefer to build their careers gradually through structured European systems before making a final senior international decision.

He also noted that Italy’s youth setup offers consistent exposure, high-level competition, and a clear pathway to the senior national team factors that can strongly influence a young player’s decision.

Despite the current situation, the door is not entirely closed for Nigeria. FIFA rules still allow players to switch allegiance at senior level, meaning Kayode could still represent the Super Eagles in the future if he chooses.

The development once again highlights the ongoing challenge Nigeria faces in securing dual-nationality talents, as competition from European nations continues to intensify.
