Crystal Palace have won the race to sign Nigeria eligible defender Honest Ahanor on loan after Chelsea agreed a deal to bring the highly rated teenager to England from Atalanta.
The 18 year old centre back is expected to spend the 2026/27 season at Selhurst Park before joining Chelsea on a permanent basis next summer.
Chelsea have agreed a package worth around £40 million for Ahanor, although the structure of the deal means the defender will initially remain with Atalanta before moving to Crystal Palace on loan.
A medical has been scheduled as the final stages of the complicated transfer are completed.
The arrangement is unusual because Chelsea already have Axel Disasi on loan at Crystal Palace. Premier League rules restrict clubs from loaning more than one player to the same Premier League side, prompting the clubs to structure Ahanor’s temporary move through Atalanta.
Ahanor is regarded as one of the most exciting young defenders to emerge from Italian football. Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, he came through the Genoa academy before joining Atalanta in 2025.
He quickly established himself at senior level and made 35 appearances across all competitions during the 2025/26 campaign, including nine appearances in the Champions League.
The teenager’s versatility has also contributed to his growing reputation. He is capable of operating as a centre back and left back, while his technical ability allows him to contribute comfortably when playing out from defence.
Chelsea’s decision to secure his future reflects their continued investment in young players with significant long term potential.
However, the Blues believe regular Premier League football will be more beneficial for Ahanor at this stage of his development. Crystal Palace will therefore provide the defender with an opportunity to gain experience in English football before he eventually reports for duty at Stamford Bridge.
Palace were not the only Premier League club interested in the youngster, but they have now won the race and are set to add another promising defender to their squad.
For Ahanor, the move represents a major breakthrough. He will have the chance to test himself against Premier League opposition while continuing his development under senior coaches.
The defender’s international future is also worth watching. Ahanor has represented Italy at youth level, but his Nigerian heritage means he remains eligible to represent the Super Eagles should he eventually choose to switch allegiance.
For now, his immediate priority will be completing the move and establishing himself at Crystal Palace.
If he can make a strong impression during his loan spell, Ahanor could arrive at Chelsea next summer with valuable Premier League experience and a major opportunity to compete for a place in the Blues’ long term plans.
