Kelechi Iheanacho continued his remarkable start to life at Bursaspor with another brace as the Turkish side thrashed İstanbulspor 4 0 on Thursday night.
The Super Eagles forward scored twice to extend his remarkable run to six goals in his last five appearances, while also contributing two assists during that period.
Iheanacho opened his account against İstanbulspor in the 45th minute, finishing with his left foot after Bursaspor had dominated possession and territory in the first half.
He struck again in the 77th minute to complete his brace and put the result beyond doubt as Bursaspor recorded their fourth league victory of the season.
The 29 year old has now scored in five consecutive matches, underlining the dramatic return to form he has enjoyed since moving to Turkey.
His incredible run began with a goal and an assist against Bodrum FK on the opening weekend. He then found the net against Iğdır FK before scoring again against Karagümrük.
Iheanacho followed those performances with another goal and an assist against Kayserispor, helping Bursaspor fight back from a goal down to win 2 1.
His latest brace against İstanbulspor has taken his tally to six goals and two assists from five league appearances.
That means the Nigerian has been directly involved in eight goals during the run, contributing to almost all of Bursaspor’s goals in the process.
The former Manchester City and Leicester City forward is also currently leading the scoring charts in Turkey’s second tier, further highlighting the impact he has made since arriving at the club.
Bursaspor have also enjoyed a strong start to the campaign. Their victory over İstanbulspor moved them to 12 points from five matches, keeping them firmly among the early promotion contenders.
The change of scenery appears to have provided exactly what he needed after a difficult period in his career.
The striker left Celtic during the summer and joined Bursaspor as a free agent, looking for regular football and an opportunity to rediscover the form that once made him one of Nigeria’s leading forwards.
He is now producing the kind of numbers that could put him back into the conversation for the Super Eagles.
Nigeria have no shortage of attacking options, but Iheanacho’s experience and current goalscoring form could give head coach Eric Chelle another option to consider.
At 29, the forward still has plenty of international experience and has previously played a major role for Nigeria at major tournaments.
However, his focus will be on maintaining his incredible form with Bursaspor.
Six goals and two assists have already transformed Iheanacho’s start to life in Turkey into one of the most impressive Nigerian football stories of the new season.
