Manchester United’s Danish-Nigerian forward Chido Obi found the back of the net once more on Sunday afternoon as the Under-21 side held off a spirited Sunderland to win 3-2 and book their place in the Premier League 2 play-off quarter-finals.
Obi opened the scoring in the 15th minute at Leigh Sports Village, latching onto a threaded pass from Jack Moorhouse before keeping his composure to slot the ball into the bottom corner. It was a goal that set the tone for a contest that proved far more eventful than many had predicted.
United doubled their lead in the 26th minute when Jack Fletcher pounced on a loose ball after Moorhouse saw his shot blocked on the goal line. However, Sunderland pulled one back just three minutes later through Felix Scott, who punished a defensive lapse to roll the ball under goalkeeper Will Murdock and ensure the visitors went into the break trailing by only a single goal.
Head coach Adam Lawrence watched his side restore a two-goal cushion in the 57th minute. Shea Lacey, a player who has already caught the eye of the first-team bench, cut inside from the right and fired a low shot into the corner to make it 3-1. The goal was created by a high press from Tyler Fletcher, who intercepted a pass in midfield to set Lacey free.
Yet Sunderland refused to go away. Jack Whittaker capitalised on a slip from Tyler Fletcher at the edge of the United area and drilled a low shot past Murdock to cut the deficit to 3-2 with just under 20 minutes remaining. United had to withstand late pressure, including a dangerous solo run from Sunderland’s Jenson Jones, but a crucial block from skipper Sonny Aljofree preserved the win.
The victory sends United into the last eight, where they will face either Liverpool or Crystal Palace away between Friday 1 and Monday 4 May. The young Reds finished second in the league phase, losing the title to Chelsea on goal difference, while Sunderland ended the regular season in 15th place.
For Chido Obi, Sunday’s opener marked yet another goal in what is becoming a breakthrough campaign. The 18-year-old, who joined United from Arsenal’s academy in July 2024, has been moving between the Under-18 and Under-21 sides. Only nine days before this match, he was the hero for the Under-18s, scoring the goal that sent United into the FA Youth Cup final.
He has also made eight first-team appearances this season. His progress has not gone unnoticed, with United legend and current interim head coach Michael Carrick said to be keeping a close eye on his development.
Internationally, Chido-Obi Martins is still eligible to represent Denmark, where he was born, and Nigeria, his father’s homeland. He has played for Denmark’s youth teams and led their Under-17s as captain, but recent comments suggest he is keeping his options open. For now, his focus remains firmly on helping United’s academy chase silverware this season.
