Bournemouth defender Matai Akinmboni has joined Scottish Premiership side Dundee on a season long loan as the young centre back looks to gain valuable first team experience.
The 19 year old completed the move after spending the past two weeks training with Dundee and impressing manager Steven Pressley and his coaching staff.
Akinmboni joined Bournemouth from Major League Soccer side DC United in January 2025 and was handed a multi year contract by the Premier League club.
However, he is yet to make his senior debut for Bournemouth, making regular first team football the priority as he continues his development.
Dundee confirmed that Akinmboni will remain at the club for the remainder of the 2026/27 campaign.
The defender said he was eager to get started after watching Dundee’s recent derby victory and experiencing the atmosphere around the club.
He will now compete for a regular place in a Dundee defence that also includes former Bournemouth defender Owen Bevan.
Pressley has already expressed his excitement about the youngster’s potential, describing him as a player who has impressed since arriving on trial.
Bournemouth also have high hopes for Akinmboni, who joined the Premier League club after making his professional debut in the United States at a remarkably young age.
The Maryland born defender became the youngest player of Nigerian descent to make his MLS debut when he started for DC United against Real Salt Lake in September 2022 at just 15 years and 328 days old.
Akinmboni has represented the United States at youth international level, including appearances for the Under 20 side. However, he remains eligible to represent Nigeria through his parents.
The centre back is the nephew of former Bayern Munich and Ghana defender Samuel Kuffour, giving him a notable football connection within his family.
His move to Dundee should provide an important opportunity to gain senior experience after his progression was disrupted by injury problems during his early years at Bournemouth.
Te loan represents a chance for one of their highly rated young defenders to develop through regular competitive football.
The immediate objective is clear. He wants to play as much as possible, establish himself in the Dundee team and return to Bournemouth with greater experience.
If he can stay fit and make a strong impression in Scotland, the Nigerian eligible defender could put himself in a much stronger position to challenge for a first team opportunity at Bournemouth in the future.
