A former Dutch league champion has fired back at Club Brugge coach after comments perceived as disrespectful towards Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika sparked controversy.

The coach’s remarks, which questioned Onyedika’s quality and contribution, quickly made headlines and drew reactions from former players and analysts across Europe. Among the loudest voices was the ex-Dutch champion, who described the comments as “unfair, unnecessary, and harmful to a young player’s confidence.”

He insisted that Onyedika has shown strong growth, discipline, and consistency since joining Club Brugge, adding that the midfielder’s playing style is often misunderstood.

According to him, Onyedika’s role isn’t always about flashy statistics but about balance, defensive awareness, and tactical responsibility areas where he believes the Nigerian has excelled.

He urged the coach to support his players publicly rather than criticize them in a way that could damage morale.

The incident has fueled debate among fans and pundits about how coaches communicate criticism and the pressure young African players face in European leagues.
