Benjamin Fredrick has been handed a new squad number at Brentford after the Nigerian defender was officially promoted to the Premier League club’s first team.
The 21 year old centre back will wear the No. 48 shirt during the 2026/27 season, marking another significant step in his rapid rise since joining the west London club.
Fredrick was promoted to Brentford’s senior squad during the summer after impressing during his development with the club’s B team and during a loan spell in Belgium.
His promotion was followed by a new four year contract, with Brentford also holding an option to extend the agreement by another season.
The Nigeria international had spent the 2025/26 campaign on loan at FCV Dender in Belgium, where he made 15 appearances across the Belgian Pro League and Belgian Cup before a knee injury brought his spell to an early end.
Before the injury setback, Fredrick had established himself as an important player for Dender and continued to build on the progress he made with Brentford’s development side.
His performances had already earned him international recognition. Fredrick made his senior Nigeria debut in 2025 and subsequently featured prominently during the Super Eagles’ 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
Brentford head coach Keith Andrews has previously praised the defender’s potential, while the club’s coaching staff have highlighted his one on one defending, bravery and willingness to learn.
Fredrick’s journey has been particularly impressive considering that he only moved to Brentford B in 2023. The defender initially joined on loan before the Premier League club made the transfer permanent in 2024.
He also won Brentford B’s Players’ Player of the Year award in May 2025, further underlining his development within the club’s system.
Now, with his promotion confirmed and the No. 48 shirt assigned to him, Fredrick will be looking to make the next major breakthrough of his career by earning regular Premier League opportunities.
Brentford’s decision to keep him with the first team rather than send him out on another loan shows the confidence the club has in his ability to compete at senior level.
Fredrick’s progress is equally encouraging. The young defender is already part of the Super Eagles setup and will now have the opportunity to develop alongside established Premier League players.
His immediate target will be to regain full match sharpness, compete for a place in Keith Andrews’ defence and finally make his Premier League debut.
