Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has explained that his decision to represent Nigeria was never something he struggled with, despite being eligible to play for Germany.
The Düsseldorf-born shot-stopper, who came through the Bayer Leverkusen academy, is eligible for the Super Eagles through his Nigerian father.
At the time, former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr was actively scouting dual-nationality players across Europe, and Okoye was among those who were approached to switch allegiance to Nigeria’s senior team.
Okoye has now revealed that once the opportunity came, he did not hesitate, as his connection to Nigeria made the decision feel natural.
Although he was raised in Germany and developed through their football system, he admitted that representing Nigeria carried a stronger personal meaning for him.
Since committing to the Super Eagles, Okoye has featured at international level and continues to compete for the number one goalkeeping spot within the squad.
His choice reflects a wider trend of players with dual eligibility opting to play for Nigeria, strengthening the national team with talent developed across Europe.
