Alex Iwobi says he has never doubted his decision to represent Nigeria despite having the opportunity to continue his international career with England, as the Fulham midfielder prepares to reach a major milestone with the Super Eagles.
The 30-year-old is expected to earn his 100th international cap when Nigeria face Portugal in a high-profile friendly in Leiria on Wednesday. If he features, Iwobi will become only the fourth player in Nigerian football history to reach the century mark in appearances for the national team.
Born in Lagos but raised in England, Iwobi represented England at youth level before switching allegiance to Nigeria in 2015. More than a decade after making that choice, the former Arsenal and Everton midfielder insists he has no regrets.
“I am proud to be where I am today; proud to wear the green and white,” Iwobi said while reflecting on his international journey. “I have no regrets choosing Nigeria.
Iwobi made his senior debut for the Super Eagles in a friendly against DR Congo in October 2015 and has since established himself as one of the most consistent figures in the national team setup. During that period, he has featured at the FIFA World Cup, played in multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and helped Nigeria claim silver and bronze medals on the continental stage.
The midfielder revealed that although he enjoyed his time with England’s youth teams, he always felt a stronger connection to Nigeria whenever international football was discussed.
According to Iwobi, his father played an important advisory role but ultimately allowed him to make the final decision on his future.
The Fulham star also reflected on some of the most memorable moments of his Super Eagles career, with his decisive goal against Zambia in 2017 standing out above the rest. That victory secured Nigeria’s qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and remains one of the defining moments of his international career.
Despite approaching 100 appearances for his country, Iwobi has remained modest about his achievements, insisting he does not view himself as a Nigerian football legend.
Instead, he says his focus remains on helping the Super Eagles achieve greater success in the years ahead.
The landmark appearance against Portugal would further cement Iwobi’s place among Nigeria’s most decorated internationals. Current records show only Ahmed Musa, Vincent Enyeama and Joseph Yobo have previously reached the 100-cap milestone for the Super Eagles.
As Nigeria continue preparations for future international competitions, Iwobi’s longevity, experience and commitment remain valuable assets for Eric Chelle’s side, with the midfielder showing no signs of slowing down after more than a decade in national team colours.
