“Overweight Unprofessional?” — Victor Boniface Under Fire as Troubled Season Takes Shocking Turn

It was supposed to be a comeback story. Instead, it’s turning into a storm.

Victor Boniface has found himself at the center of intense criticism just as he edges closer to a return from injury and the noise is getting louder by the day.

After spending nearly three months out following knee surgery, the Nigerian striker recently resumed training at Werder Bremen. But rather than headlines celebrating his recovery, the spotlight has shifted to something far more controversial his fitness.

Victor Boniface

Reports suggest Boniface returned carrying extra weight, with images from training quickly making rounds online. What followed was a wave of backlash from former players and pundits, many of whom didn’t hold back in their assessment.

One of the harshest criticisms came from former Bremen forward Martin Harnik, who questioned the striker’s professionalism. He warned that returning in poor physical condition after a long injury layoff could place even more strain on the body especially on the knees.

The criticism didn’t stop there.

Ex-captain Max Kruse reportedly went even further, suggesting Boniface’s current state raises serious concerns about his commitment. For many observers, the issue isn’t just the weight it’s what it represents at a crucial point in his career.

Even within the club, there’s cautious concern. Head coach Daniel Thioune has welcomed the striker back but made it clear that his fitness levels still need significant improvement before he can compete at full intensity.

It’s a sharp contrast to the Boniface fans remember.

Not long ago, he was one of the most exciting forwards in Europe, playing a key role at Bayer Leverkusen and showcasing power, pace, and confidence in front of goal. But this season has been anything but smooth. Injuries, a loan move, and now fitness concerns have combined to stall his momentum at a critical stage.

On the pitch, things haven’t helped his case either. Before the injury setback, goals were hard to come by, and consistency remained a challenge.

Still, this story isn’t finished.

Despite the criticism, Boniface is back in training, and there’s growing belief he could still feature again before the season wraps up if he can rebuild his sharpness in time.

And maybe, just maybe, this backlash could become fuel.

Football has a way of flipping narratives. Players get doubted, written off, questioned… and then they respond.

For Boniface, the path forward is simple but demanding: prove them wrong.

Because the next few weeks won’t just shape his season they might shape everything that comes next.
