Ademola Lookman etched his name into Nigerian football history on Saturday night, but it ended in heartbreak as Atletico Madrid fell to Real Sociedad in a dramatic Copa del Rey final.
The Super Eagles forward found the net in the high-stakes clash, helping Atletico to a 2-2 draw after extra time before they eventually lost 4-3 on penalties in Seville.
Lookman’s goal, a composed finish after being teed up by Antoine Griezmann, cancelled out Sociedad’s lightning opener and underlined his growing importance in Diego Simeone’s side.
Despite the defeat, the 28-year-old achieved a notable personal milestone. His strike saw him equal a long-standing Super Eagles record by becoming only the second Nigerian in nearly three decades to score in a Copa del Rey final, following in the footsteps of Finidi George, who did so in 1997.
There had been hopes before kickoff that Lookman could go one step further by ending a 29-year wait for a Nigerian Copa del Rey winner, a feat last achieved by Emmanuel Amuneke with Barcelona. But like Finidi, he finished on the losing side after a fiercely contested final.
The match itself delivered drama from start to finish. Sociedad stunned Atletico with a goal inside 15 seconds, before Lookman restored parity. Mikel Oyarzabal put the Basque side back in front before halftime, and Julian Alvarez later forced extra time with a late equaliser.
With neither side able to find a winner in extra time, the contest was settled from the spot, where Sociedad held their nerve to lift the trophy, leaving Atletico players devastated.
For Lookman, it was a night that perfectly captured the fine margins of football. A record matched, a standout performance delivered, but ultimately, a trophy that slipped away.
Still, his impact since arriving in Spain continues to grow, and this performance on one of the biggest domestic stages will only strengthen his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most influential forwards in Europe.
