Super Eagles striker, Paul Onuachu has finally joined the list of Super Eagles’ players that are injured.
Paul Onuachu found his shooting boots again on Sunday, scoring twice in Trabzonspor’s 5-0 demolition of Genclerbirligi.
However, the celebration didn’t last long. He was hobbling off by the 44th minute and now Nigeria has one more injury worry to deal with just weeks out from its AFCON qualifiers .
Paul Onuachu has been on a goal drought for the past five matches. It took Onuachu all of five minutes to end an eight-game dry spell, heading in a cross from Aral Simsir. Mohamed Salah made it 2-0 from the spot not long after, and Onuachu grabbed his second in the 22nd minute, tapping in from close range to put Trabzonspor firmly in charge.
Everything was going his way. Then came a physical challenge before the break and he had to be helped off, replaced by Franculino Dju. Trabzonspor didn’t miss a beat though, cruising to a 5-0 win that lifted them to fourth in the table.
Huseyin Cimsir, Trabzonspor’s interim coach explained that the injury is not a major one and that he expects to score more ince he rerurns.
Still, the club will need a few more days to be sure before he’s cleared for the trip to Konyaspor. Chibuike Nwaiwu also had a good afternoon, winning the penalty Salah converted and helping keep a clean sheet.
Eric Chelle, Super Eagles coach is tensed as Victor Osimhen is also part of Super Eagles injured player. Victor Osimhen is already nursing a groin issue from Galatasaray’s last game and now Onuachu is banged up too, right as Nigeria gets ready to face Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau this month. Chelle will be watching both situations closely before he names his squad.
Sadiq Umar, Zaidu Sanusi, Tochukwu Nnadi, Dele Bashiru are some of Super Eagles players that are injured.
In the next few days, Trabzonspor should have a clearer picture on Onuachu with his fitness for the Konyaspor game depending on how he responds to treatment. It’s a waiting game on two of his most important forwards heading into a qualifying window Nigeria can’t afford to fumble.
