Frank Onyeka has been passed fit for Coventry City’s trip to the Etihad Stadium, ending a spell on the sidelines that had stretched back to the club’s opening weekend defeat to Arsenal.

The midfielder sat out the Sky Blues’ last two competitive outings against Plymouth Argyle in the Carabao Cup and Hull City in the Premier League, but head coach Frank Lampard has now confirmed his availability ahead of Saturday’s daunting assignment against Manchester City.

Speaking on the eve of the Etihad clash, Lampard revealed that Onyeka would be in contention for a side that has yet to pick up a point or a goal from its opening two league fixtures.

According to the manager explained his midfield options had been stretched thin, noting that Ephron Mason-Clark had missed pre-season while Jack Rudoni was only just back from his own spell out. Onyeka’s return therefore gives Lampard a physically imposing and tactically disciplined option at a moment when Coventry are searching for their first points of the campaign.

Onyeka’s importance to this Coventry side has been evident since he first arrived on loan from Brentford in January. He went on to make 14 Championship appearances during the promotion run, chipping in with a goal and an assist, before the switch to CBS Arena was made permanent over the summer following the club’s promotion to the Premier League. However, his top flight return has so far been limited to a single outing, the season opener against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Against a Manchester City side under Enzo Maresca, Onyeka’s physicality and defensive discipline should prove valuable, particularly if Coventry are forced to soak up long spells without the ball. His prior experience in the Premier League with Brentford, as well as a spell in the Bundesliga with Augsburg, also gives him an edge over some of Coventry’s younger midfield alternatives such as Yirenki Josiah.

Lampard’s update lands at a useful time for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who is preparing his squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bishau.

Nigeria’s midfield options have already been stretched by fitness concerns surrounding Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Tochukwu Nnadi, meaning a match fit Onyeka arriving in camp would offer Chelle some much-needed depth and experience in that area of the pitch. His return does not guarantee him a starting berth, but it does take one selection worry off the coach’s plate as preparations for the qualifiers continue.

Onyeka’s first real test comes against Manchester City this weekend, where his ability to shield a defence already under early season pressure will be closely watched. Should he come through unscathed and build on that with further game time for Coventry, he would head into the Super Eagles camp for the Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau qualifiers in good shape physically, giving Chelle another readymade option as Nigeria continues its push toward the 2027 tournament in East Africa.
