Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka will become a permanent Coventry City player next season after the club secured promotion to the Premier League on Friday night.
The 27 year old Nigerian international joined Coventry on loan from Brentford during the January transfer window. The agreement between the two clubs included a clause that would trigger an obligation to buy if the Sky Blues gained promotion to the top flight. That condition was met when Coventry drew 1-1 against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, confirming their return to the Premier League after 25 years away.
Bobby Thomas scored the decisive equaliser for Coventry in the 84th minute, cancelling out Sammie Szmodics’ first-half penalty for Blackburn. The result sparked wild celebrations among the travelling Coventry supporters and inside the away dressing room.
Onyeka started the match and played 62 minutes before being replaced. He completed 26 of his 32 pass attempts, won two tackles, made two clearances, and recovered possession six times. Since arriving at the club in February, the midfielder has featured in 11 Championship matches and has become a trusted figure in manager Frank Lampard’s setup.
Speaking before the Blackburn fixture, Coventry teammate Jack Rudoni praised Onyeka’s contribution. “Frank’s like my new best mate, I love him. I can kind of just stand in the pocket and wait for Frank to demolish someone and give me the ball,” Rudoni said in an Interview.
The permanent transfer is valued in the region of £7 million according to reports. Onyeka originally joined Brentford from Danish club FC Midtjylland in 2021 for a fee of around €10 million. He made 87 appearances across all competitions for the Bees but struggled to secure a consistent starting role in the Premier League. A brief loan spell at German Bundesliga side FC Augsburg preceded his move to Coventry.
Coventry City’s promotion caps a remarkable recovery for a club that was playing in League Two as recently as 2018. Under former manager Mark Robins and now Frank Lampard, the Sky Blues have steadily climbed the English football pyramid. Their return to the Premier League marks the first time the club will feature in the top division since being relegated in 2001.
Onyeka remains an active member of the Super Eagles setup and was part of the Nigerian squad that finished as runners up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire. He also featured during the 2025 AFCON qualifying campaign.
The midfielder is expected to link up with Coventry for pre-season training ahead of the 2026-27 Premier League campaign.
