Former Nigerian international Dimeji Lawal believes the Super Eagles have enough quality to compete against Portugal and Poland despite the absence of key forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
The duo were initially named in Eric Chelle’s squad for next month’s international friendlies, but both players have since been withdrawn from the team.
According to Chelle, the decision was taken to protect the players’ fitness and also respect requests from their respective clubs.
Speaking on the development, Lawal insisted that the absence of the two attackers should not cause panic within the Super Eagles camp.
“I don’t think the absence of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman should be a big issue for the Super Eagles ahead of their friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
“With the other players at Chelle’s disposal, I believe the team is capable of withstanding Portugal and Poland. Two or three players that performed well at the Unity Cup can be drafted to replace them.“
Osimhen and Lookman have been among Nigeria’s standout performers in recent years, contributing goals and assists in major matches for both club and country. Their absence will undoubtedly be felt, but Lawal believes it also presents an opportunity for other players to stake a claim for a regular place in the squad.
The friendlies will provide Chelle with another chance to assess his options as he continues to shape the team ahead of future competitive fixtures.
Nigeria will take on Poland on June 3 at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw before facing Portugal seven days later at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria.
Although the squad has been affected by a number of issues, including transfer-related matters, club requests, personal reasons and visa complications, the matches remain important tests for the Super Eagles.
For Chelle, the games are not only about results. They are also an opportunity to evaluate new faces, strengthen competition within the squad and build a team capable of challenging for honours in the years ahead.
With or without Osimhen and Lookman, all eyes will be on the Super Eagles as they prepare for two demanding tests against European opposition.
