Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche has successfully undergone surgery on his injured right knee, according to an official statement released by Getafe CF. The procedure took place in Lyon, France, and marks the first concrete step in what is expected to be a long road back to fitness for the Nigerian international.

Getafe confirmed that the surgery went ahead as planned and proceeded without complications. The club stated that the operation was overseen by Dr Christofer Oyola, head of Getafe’s medical department, alongside Álvaro García Zudaire, who leads the club’s physiotherapy unit, as reported by [Jornada Perfecta] Getafe added that Uche has now begun his rehabilitation process, with the club promising to provide him with every resource needed to support a full recovery.

Uche picked up the injury during Getafe’s pre-season friendly against AS Monaco on August 6, a match the Spanish side lost 1-0. He was withdrawn on a stretcher in the second half following a dangerous challenge from Monaco defender Christian Mawissa, who was shown a straight red card for the tackle.
Getafe initially described the issue as a contusion to the kneecap, however subsequent scans painted a far grimmer picture. An MRI later revealed multiple tears to the ligaments and meniscus in his right knee, a diagnosis serious enough to rule him out for the remainder of the 2026/27 campaign.
Following the diagnosis, Uche took to Instagram to address the setback directly. He described it as one of the toughest days of his career and admitted that accepting a lengthy spell on the sidelines was difficult, given how much football means to him. Nevertheless, he vowed to approach his recovery with strength, patience, and determination.

The injury represents a significant blow for the Super Eagles, who will now have to navigate their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign without one of their emerging midfield options. Nigeria are grouped alongside Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau, and Tanzania in the qualifiers, which get underway next month.
Consequently, head coach and technical crew will likely have to explore alternatives in central midfield, as Uche’s rehabilitation timeline points toward a return only around the middle of next year, well beyond the qualifying window.
Uche only earned his first senior Super Eagles caps in 2025, and the timing of the injury interrupts what had been a promising rise onto the international stage. As a result, his path back into contention for Nigeria duty will now depend heavily on how quickly he can return to full match sharpness once his rehabilitation is complete.

Serious knee ligament injuries of this nature typically require six to nine months of rehabilitation before a player can return to full training, meaning Uche’s focus for the foreseeable future will be entirely on his recovery rather than football matters. Getafe have already ruled him out for the whole of the 2026/27 season, and the club will continue to monitor his progress through the coming months.
Meanwhile, Uche returned to Getafe this summer following a difficult loan spell at Crystal Palace, where he managed just 14 Premier League appearances, so his long term role at the club upon his eventual return remains an open question. For now, however, the successful completion of surgery gives both player and club a positive marker from which the recovery process can begin.
