Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has shed light on his decision to hand opportunities to more young players as he continues to shape the future of the Nigerian national team.

The Franco-Malian tactician has used the ongoing international window to assess a number of emerging talents, with several home-based and foreign-based youngsters earning call-ups for the Unity Cup and subsequent friendly matches.

Nigeria’s triumph at the Unity Cup provided a platform for some of these players to showcase their abilities, while others were handed valuable minutes during the Super Eagles’ 2-2 draw against Poland on Wednesday.

As preparations continue for next week’s high-profile friendly against Portugal, Chelle believes introducing fresh faces into the squad is essential to maintaining competition and raising the overall standard of the team.

“We analyse our game and we try to put some players who can make the team improve because for me and for everybody it takes one detail to win a trophy,” Chelle told the Super Eagles media team.

“So we have to improve because I think we have to put some young players who can bring a new mentality, something new and it’s not only about a question of mentality because the group has the mentality to win but we need to put something fresh.

Some players will come with lots of energy, they will bring something like they want to win, to improve and the national team can be this for them.”

The comments reflect Chelle’s long-term vision for the Super Eagles, with the coach keen on building a squad capable of competing consistently at the highest level while creating a pathway for the next generation of Nigerian talent.

Portugal Awaits Super Eagles

Attention now turns to Portugal, who will host Nigeria in Leiria on June 10 in what is expected to be one of the biggest international friendlies of the window.

The fixture presents another opportunity for Chelle’s side to test themselves against elite opposition as they continue their rebuilding process under the new manager.

Nigeria head into the contest unbeaten in their last six matches, a run that has generated optimism among supporters despite the team’s recent failure to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles will also be seeking redemption against the Portuguese after suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat when both countries last met in an international friendly in 2022.

With several young players eager to stake their claim for regular places in the squad, the clash against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal could offer another glimpse into the future direction of the Super Eagles under Chelle’s leadership.
