Victor Boniface’s fight to revive his season at Werder Bremen has taken another tense turn, with head coach Daniel Thioune making it clear that the Nigerian forward must prove himself or risk being left behind.

The 25-year-old striker, currently on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, has endured a frustrating campaign in Germany, struggling with injuries, fitness concerns and limited game time. His situation has now become even more delicate as Bremen prepare for a crucial Bundesliga clash against Augsburg.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Thioune admitted that selection decisions are looming and no player will be guaranteed a place without meeting the required standard. The message was direct: Boniface must earn his spot through performance and readiness, not reputation.

The former Union Saint-Gilloise star has barely featured in recent months, with injuries and illness disrupting his rhythm. He has made just a handful of appearances this season and is still searching for his first goal in Bremen colours.

Despite recently returning to training, concerns remain over his match fitness and overall condition. Reports around the club suggest that Boniface is still working his way back to full sharpness after a lengthy layoff, and competition for places in attack is intensifying.

Thioune, who took over during a difficult period for the club, is under pressure to steer Bremen away from relegation trouble, and that urgency is shaping his selection calls. The coach has already stressed in recent weeks that only players who are fully ready will be considered for matchday squads, underlining the high standards required at this stage of the season.

For Boniface, the message is clear. With Bremen battling to secure their Bundesliga status and key matches approaching, there is little room for patience. Every player must contribute immediately or risk being sidelined.

The upcoming clash with Augsburg could prove decisive, not just for Bremen’s survival hopes, but also for Boniface’s future at the club. After a season derailed by setbacks, the Nigerian now faces a defining moment to show he still has a role to play.
