New Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has revealed that former Manchester United and Netherlands legend Edwin van der Sar is the goalkeeper he admired most while growing up.

Okonkwo, who is pushing to establish himself as part of Nigeria’s new generation of goalkeepers, made the revelation during an appearance on the Wrexham Podcast, where he was asked to name the greatest goalkeeper of all time.
The 23 year old did not hesitate in his response, naming Van der Sar and explaining that he grew up watching the former Dutch international.

“I grew up watching him,” Okonkwo said while speaking about Van der Sar’s influence.
Okonkwo’s admiration for Van der Sar will not come as a surprise to football fans, as the Manchester United icon is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers of his era, known for his calm presence, shot stopping and leadership.

The Nigerian eligible goalkeeper has been developing steadily in England after rising through Arsenal’s academy system before moving on to gain first team experience. His recent progress has continued to draw attention, especially with Nigeria looking to strengthen its goalkeeping department ahead of future international competitions.
