Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho remains in limbo over his future at Celtic as his current contract edges closer to expiration, with the Scottish champions yet to decide whether to activate the option of extending his stay, SportCabal reports.
The Nigerian international joined Celtic on a one-year contract last summer, which included an option for an additional 12 months. However, his first few months at Parkhead proved challenging after he arrived without the benefit of a full pre-season, leaving him short of match fitness.
Despite the slow start, Iheanacho gradually found his rhythm and became an important figure during the closing stages of the 2025/26 campaign. His crucial goals played a significant role in helping Celtic complete a domestic double, strengthening the argument for a new deal.
However, with his current contract set to expire in the coming days, uncertainty continues to surround the 29-year-old’s future.
John Inglis backs Celtic to keep Iheanacho
Reports have linked Iheanacho with a possible move to Brazilian club Vasco da Gama, while Celtic continue to assess attacking options ahead of the new season as manager Martin O’Neill looks to strengthen his squad for another title challenge and a stronger European campaign.
Former Aberdeen defender John Inglis believes Celtic should retain the Nigerian striker, insisting he has already demonstrated his value to the club.
“Celtic should absolutely look to keep Kelechi.
“I know how much he loved playing for the club last season and the joy he took from winning the big trophies. I think he proved himself with very important goals. Kelechi’s just a brilliant finisher in the box.
“He almost went to Celtic at the start of last year after Brendan Rodgers came in for him. We had good discussions over the possibility and Kelechi was very keen to play again for Brendan.
“But Middlesbrough were really determined for his signature and even sent a private jet for him. Kelechi joined them.”
Inglis, who previously represented Iheanacho as his agent, also believes a full pre-season could help the Super Eagles forward return to his very best after consecutive years of disrupted preparations.
“What I do think is vital is that he gets a full pre-season with a team and if Celtic are to do anything to keep him then I’d urge them to move quickly.
“Kelechi’s missed the last couple of pre-seasons and it’s left him having to play catch-up with his fitness going into the seasons that have followed. It happened again when he went to Celtic and it took him time to get up to speed.
“But everyone saw how good he can be. He’s a big-game player and a tremendous pressure-moment finisher. I don’t look after Kelechi now but I still regard him as a friend.
“I’d be delighted to see him stay at Celtic – and I know he’d also be very happy about that. But other clubs are now being alerted to the fact he’s available.”
Celtic face crucial Iheanacho decision
Celtic must now make a significant decision regarding Iheanacho’s future. While there is little doubt about his ability in front of goal, questions remain over his fitness levels and whether he can consistently remain available throughout a demanding campaign.
The Super Eagles forward is already attracting interest from clubs in Turkey and the Middle East, meaning Celtic could face stiff competition if they decide to negotiate a new deal. Should the Scottish champions opt against extending his contract, Iheanacho could soon be set for the next chapter of his career.
