The race for Africa’s places at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is heating up, and five nations have officially secured their tickets to the global showpiece which are Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, and Ghana. These teams booked early qualification after strong performances in their respective CAF qualifying groups, confirming their dominance in one of the most competitive campaigns in recent memory.
1. Morocco
The Atlas Lions of Morocco became the first African team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The 2022 semi-finalists have continued their fine form under coach Walid Regragui, maintaining an unbeaten record in their group. With stars like Achraf Hakimi, Hakim Ziyech, and Youssef En-Nesyri, Morocco’s balanced squad has once again shown why they are currently Africa’s top-ranked national team.
2. Tunisia
The Carthage Eagles of Tunisia followed shortly after, confirming their spot with a decisive win that cemented their place as group leaders. Tunisia’s qualification adds to their impressive record of World Cup appearances, marking their seventh participation in football’s biggest tournament. Egypt became the third African team to qualify after a convincing victory over Djibouti earlier in October. Four More Spots Still to Be Decided
CAF has nine automatic qualification slots for the 2026 tournament which is up from five in previous editions, with an additional spot available through the intercontinental playoff. This means four African countries can still join the five already qualified.
The battle for the remaining places is expected to go down to the wire, with teams like Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Cameroon, and DR Congo all still mathematically in contention. Each group winner will qualify automatically, while the best second-placed teams will compete for the final playoff spot.
