FIFA has imposed disciplinary sanctions on both Nigeria Football Federation and the Fédération Congolaise de Football Association following incidents that occurred during the 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoff between the Super Eagles and DR Congo.
The match, played in Morocco in November 2025, ended in dramatic fashion as DR Congo defeated Nigeria 4–3 on penalties after a 1–1 draw to advance to the intercontinental playoff stage.
According to FIFA’s disciplinary report, Nigeria was sanctioned after supporters threw objects during the match, an act considered a breach of stadium security and order regulations under the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The NFF was fined 1,000 Swiss francs for the incident.
DR Congo’s football federation also received punishment after fans were found to have used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the game, which is prohibited under FIFA rules. For that offence, the Congolese federation was fined 5,000 Swiss francs.
FIFA explained that the sanctions were part of its routine disciplinary review of incidents that occur during international matches. The world football governing body also noted that such decisions are based on the specific circumstances surrounding each case and may still be subject to appeal by the affected federations.
The playoff between Nigeria and DR Congo had already been surrounded by controversy, with the Nigeria Football Federation previously raising concerns about the eligibility of some Congolese players before FIFA eventually confirmed DR Congo as Africa’s representative for the intercontinental playoff tournament.
This sanctions create another chapter in the tense aftermath of the playoff clash, which effectively ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
