Bukayo Saka produced the decisive moment that sent Arsenal into the UEFA Champions League final and crushed Atletico Madrid’s European hopes in a tense semi final clash at the Emirates Stadium.
The England international scored the only goal of the night as Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid to advance 2-1 on aggregate, booking their place in the Champions League final for the first time in 20 years.
Saka struck just before half time after reacting quickest inside the penalty area, handing Mikel Arteta’s side a historic win in front of a roaring Emirates crowd.
The result also ended the European dreams of Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman, who featured for Atletico Madrid but struggled to make an impact against Arsenal’s disciplined defence. The Super Eagles star found it difficult to influence the game as Diego Simeone’s side searched desperately for an equaliser in the second half.
Arsenal entered the second leg with confidence after securing a 1-1 draw in Madrid, and Arteta’s men showed maturity and composure throughout the decisive encounter in London. Despite late pressure from Atletico, the Gunners held firm to secure one of the biggest victories of the Arteta era.
For Arsenal supporters, the victory marked a long awaited return to Europe’s biggest stage. The North London club last played in a Champions League final back in 2006 when they lost to Barcelona in Paris.
Saka once again proved why he remains Arsenal’s most influential player in big moments. The Hale End academy graduate has enjoyed another outstanding season and recently signed a new long term contract with the club amid growing interest from Europe’s elite sides.
Speaking after the match, the 24 year old admitted the occasion was emotional for both the players and supporters as Arsenal moved within touching distance of a first ever Champions League title.
Arsenal will now face either Paris Saint Germain or Bayern Munich in the final scheduled to take place in Budapest later this month.
