Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has earned major recognition in France after being named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Week, following a commanding display for FC Nantes.

The Nigerian centre-back delivered an outstanding performance in Nantes’ emphatic 3-0 victory over Olympique de Marseille, one of the toughest attacking sides in the division. His contribution at the heart of defence played a crucial role in securing a clean sheet and lifting his side in a tense stage of the season.

Operating in a back three, Awaziem showed composure, strength, and tactical awareness throughout the encounter. He recorded eight clearances, won six duels, and completed the majority of his passes, underlining his growing influence since returning to the French club.

His inclusion in the weekly selection places him alongside some of Ligue 1’s standout performers, including players from clubs such as Lille, Lyon, and Paris FC, highlighting the level of competition he outperformed.

Awaziem’s resurgence in France comes after his move from MLS side Colorado Rapids in 2025. Since rejoining Nantes, where he previously had a loan spell, the Super Eagles defender has established himself as a key figure in the squad, bringing leadership and consistency to the backline.

With Nantes still battling to secure their Ligue 1 status, performances like this could prove decisive in their survival push. For Awaziem, it also strengthens his case ahead of future Super Eagles engagements, as Nigeria continues to monitor in-form players across Europe.

The recognition marks another positive moment for Nigerian players abroad, with several Super Eagles stars continuing to impress across Europe’s top leagues in the closing stages of the season.
