Nigeria may have been denied victory by a stoppage-time equaliser, but there were still plenty of positives for Eric Chelle to take from the Super Eagles’ 2-2 draw against Poland in Warsaw.
Goals from Terem Moffi and Paul Onuachu looked set to hand Nigeria another impressive result before Przemyslaw Wisniewski’s late strike rescued a draw for the hosts. While the result ended the Super Eagles’ winning run, the performance offered further evidence that Chelle’s rebuilding project is heading in the right direction.
Several players enhanced their reputations during the contest, while others may have missed an opportunity to strengthen their place in the squad ahead of future assignments.
Here are the biggest winners and losers from Nigeria’s performance against Poland.
Terem Moffi – Winner
The Nice striker continued his impressive return to international football with another influential display. Moffi opened the scoring and constantly troubled the Polish defence with his movement and physical presence.
Having struggled with injuries in recent seasons, the forward is beginning to look like the player who once established himself as one of Nigeria’s most dangerous attacking options. His goal against Poland further strengthened his case for a regular starting role under Chelle.
Wilfred Ndidi – Winner
Back in the starting lineup, the Super Eagles captain reminded everyone of his importance to the team. Ndidi brought composure, leadership and balance to Nigeria’s midfield while helping the visitors control large parts of the game.
The experienced midfielder later admitted Nigeria dominated the first half and showed enough quality to win the match, a reflection of the authority he displayed throughout the contest.
Abdullahi Bewene – Winner
Making his senior debut against a strong European opponent was never going to be easy, yet the Banik Ostrava defender handled the occasion impressively.
Handed a surprise start by Chelle, Bewene showed maturity beyond his years and looked comfortable on the international stage. His encouraging display could earn him further opportunities with the national team.
Nigeria’s Game Management – Loser
The Super Eagles led twice during the match but failed to hold onto their advantage. While the overall performance was encouraging, the inability to see out the game will frustrate Chelle and his coaching staff.
Allowing Poland back into the contest after taking the lead remains an area that requires improvement, particularly with competitive fixtures approaching.
The Defence – Loser
Although there were promising individual performances, Nigeria’s defensive unit will be disappointed after conceding twice.
The late equaliser especially highlighted the need for greater concentration in key moments. Chelle continues to assess his defensive options as he builds towards future tournaments and qualifiers.
Poland’s Late Pressure – Loser for Nigeria
For much of the game, Nigeria looked the more dangerous side and appeared on course for victory. However, the hosts finished strongly and eventually found a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time.
The inability to withstand that final wave of pressure ultimately prevented the Super Eagles from securing what would have been another notable away result against European opposition.
Despite the draw, Chelle will leave Warsaw with reasons for optimism. Moffi’s form, Ndidi’s leadership and Bewene’s emergence were among the major positives, while the performance as a whole suggested the Super Eagles are continuing to make progress under the former Mali coach.
If Nigeria can improve their defensive concentration and game management, the signs point toward a team capable of competing strongly when the next round of important fixtures arrives.
