Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has singled out Ademola Lookman as the decisive figure in Atletico Madrid’s dramatic UEFA Champions League triumph over FC Barcelona.

Lookman delivered when it mattered most, scoring the crucial goal that ultimately sealed Atletico’s passage into the semi-finals despite a 2-1 defeat on the night. The Spanish side advanced 3-2 on aggregate in a pulsating tie that tested their resilience and tactical discipline.

Reacting to the performance, Oliseh described the Nigerian forward as a “game changer,” praising his ability to influence high-pressure matches and deliver decisive moments on Europe’s biggest stage.

The encounter at the Metropolitano began at a frantic pace, with Barcelona quickly overturning Atletico’s first-leg advantage through early goals. However, just as momentum appeared to swing in favour of the visitors, Lookman struck on a swift counterattack to restore Atletico’s edge in the tie.

That goal proved to be the turning point. Diego Simeone’s men dug deep defensively, absorbing late pressure and holding on to secure a long-awaited return to the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in nearly a decade.

Oliseh’s praise reflects a growing recognition of Lookman’s importance since his move to Atletico. The Nigerian international has quickly established himself as a key attacking outlet, combining pace, intelligence and composure in crucial moments.

His impact against Barcelona is the latest in a string of standout performances against top opposition, further strengthening his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most influential players in European football.

For Atletico, the victory represents more than progression. It underlines their resurgence on the continental stage and reinforces their belief that they can compete with Europe’s elite once again.

As attention now turns to the semi-finals, Lookman’s form could prove decisive once more. And if his latest display is anything to go by, Atletico may already have their ultimate difference maker.
