Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has opened up on the controversial transfer situation involving Victor Osimhen, insisting that decisions made during the saga were influenced by then-manager Antonio Conte.

The Italian club chief has faced renewed scrutiny over the handling of Osimhen’s future, particularly after interest from Paris Saint-Germain failed to materialise into a completed deal despite strong negotiations.

Speaking on the matter, De Laurentiis defended his stance, revealing that internal discussions at the club played a major role in the outcome. According to him, Conte had indicated that Osimhen could be sold as part of a broader squad restructuring, a position that shaped Napoli’s approach during the transfer window.

The Nigerian striker had been one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe at the time, following his prolific spell with S.S.C. Napoli, where he established himself as a key figure in the club’s attacking setup. His performances attracted interest from several top clubs, with PSG emerging as one of the strongest contenders.

However, despite advanced talks and significant financial proposals, the move ultimately collapsed. De Laurentiis has now suggested that the situation was far more complex than widely reported, pointing to managerial influence and strategic planning within the club as key factors behind the failed transfer.

Reports indicate that Napoli had received offers worth over €200 million in potential deals involving Osimhen and other players, but the club opted against proceeding, partly due to commitments made within the coaching setup.

The fallout from the failed move has continued to generate debate, especially as Osimhen eventually moved on under different circumstances. The striker later completed a high-profile transfer away from Napoli, ending a chapter that saw him become one of the club’s most important players in recent history.

For Napoli, the episode highlights the delicate balance between sporting decisions and financial opportunities. While the club maintained its stance at the time, questions remain over whether rejecting such a significant offer was the right call.

As the dust settles, De Laurentiis’ latest comments provide fresh insight into one of the most talked-about transfer sagas involving an African player in recent years.
