Chelle Explains Why Portugal Chose Super Eagles Ahead Of World Cup Campaign
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle believes Wednesday’s international friendly presents a valuable opportunity for Portugal as they fine-tune preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The highly anticipated clash in Leiria will see Nigeria face one of Europe’s strongest sides, with Portugal using the encounter as part of their build-up to the global tournament, where they have been drawn alongside DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K.
According to Chelle, Portugal’s decision to face Nigeria may be influenced by their desire to gain insight into how to approach their opening World Cup fixture against DR Congo on June 17.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, the Malian tactician said:
“So this is a good opportunity for Portugal to play against us because we have already played DR Congo in the World Cup qualifying playoffs and lost on penalties, so maybe they want to see the way they will play against them (DR Congo).”
“I think they (Portugal) want to play an African team maybe because of the intensity of the game, when I speak about that I speak about physicality.”
Why Super Eagles Test Is Important To Portugal
Portugal will begin their World Cup campaign against DR Congo, a side that denied Nigeria a place at the tournament after edging the Super Eagles on penalties in the final round of the African qualifying playoffs last November.
After 120 minutes ended 1-1, the Congolese prevailed in the shootout to secure their first World Cup appearance since the 1974 tournament in West Germany.
While acknowledging the similarities that may exist between African teams in terms of intensity and physicality, Chelle insisted there is no direct comparison between Nigeria and DR Congo.
“It is not a lack of respect, we cannot compare Nigeria and DR Congo, I don’t think about who is the best team, I think about the style of the philosophy.”
Super Eagles Set For Major Test Against Portuguese Stars
Despite Portugal’s star-studded squad and status as one of the favourites for the World Cup, Chelle welcomed the challenge and believes it will provide a valuable measuring stick for his players.
The Super Eagles manager described Portugal as a team capable of going all the way at the tournament and expressed excitement about facing some of the world’s best footballers.
“We will play against a big team who can become World Cup champions. This is a big team with many big players and we are very happy to have this chance to play them.”
“This is a big game for them and for us and now my only focus is my players and just like he said (Wilfred Ndidi during the pre-match press conference) about the philosophy and the way we want to play this game, this is not about the result.”
Portugal Looking To Extend Dominance Over Nigeria
Wednesday’s encounter will mark only the second senior men’s meeting between Nigeria and Portugal.
Their previous meeting came in a friendly match in 2022, when Portugal cruised to a 4-0 victory over the Super Eagles in Lisbon, with a side led by Cristiano Ronaldo proving too strong for the three-time African champions.
This time, however, Nigeria arrive in encouraging form under Chelle and will be eager to test themselves against one of the strongest teams in world football as preparations continue for future competitive assignments.
For the Super Eagles, the match offers more than just a result. It is another opportunity to sharpen their identity, measure progress under a new coach and prove they can compete with the very best on the international stage.
