Chelsea’s title ambitions took a serious hit on Wednesday night as they suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat to struggling Leeds United at Elland Road.

The Blues were stunned early when Jaka Bijol rose unmarked to head Leeds in front in the sixth minute, setting the tone for a nightmare evening in Yorkshire. Enzo Maresca’s side looked disorganized throughout the first half and fell further behind when Ao Tanaka unleashed a brilliant strike from 18 yards after Chelsea carelessly lost possession in their own third.

Pedro Neto gave the visitors hope with a well-taken goal after the break, but any thoughts of a comeback were quickly extinguished. A defensive horror show saw Malo Gusto give the ball away, Tosin Adarabioyo’s poor touch gifted Leeds possession, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin pounced on Robert Sanchez’s weak save to restore the two-goal cushion.

The defeat was made worse by the absence of suspended midfielder Moises Caicedo, whose red card against Arsenal proved costly. Even Cole Palmer’s long-awaited return from injury couldn’t spark life into a flat Chelsea performance.

The result leaves Chelsea stuck on 24 points in fourth place, while Leeds climb to 14 points in their battle against relegation. For Maresca, questions about his rotation policy and the team’s ability to handle games against lower-ranked opposition will now intensify.

If Chelsea are serious about challenging for the title, these are exactly the matches they cannot afford to lose.
