The Nigeria Football Federation has appointed Augustine Eguavoen as interim head coach of the Super Falcons ahead of opening 2028 Olympic Games qualifying assignment against Comoros next month.
Eguavoen, who serves as the NFF Technical Director takes charge of the women’s senior national team while the Federation continues in the search of substantial replacement
He will be supported by an experienced bench featuring Nasarawa Amazons head coach Christopher Danjuma alongside former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf, who earned 68 international caps and represented Nigeria at four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, three FIFA Women’s World Cups and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
The 10-time African champions will open their Olympic qualifying campaign against Comoros in a second-round tie, with both legs set for the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on October 9 and 13.
Though, Eguavoen’s appointment for now is strictly short-term, covering this fixture while NFF search for permanent coach for the Super Falcons.
The appointment lands amid a turbulent stretch for Nigerian football administration, following the resignation of NFF president Ibrahim Gusau and members of the federation’s Executive Committee.
His appointment comes on the back of a difficult year for the Super Falcons , who suffered elimination from the Women’s World Cup and a lacklustre perfromance in Women African Cup of Nations, a result that led directly into the pressure that ultimately triggered the leadership shakeup at the federation.
While the NFF continues its hunt for the Super Falcons’ next full-time head coach, Eguavoen’s interim spell will be judged in Super Falcons subsequent matches.
