FC Barcelona have officially completed the signing of Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund, bringing an end to a transfer saga that had been building for weeks. The Catalan giants confirmed the deal on their official website, with the German forward putting pen to paper on a contract that runs until 2031.
The transfer fee is reported to be around 22 million euros, with an additional nine million euros available through performance-related add-ons. As a result, the total value of the deal could rise to 31 million euros. Dortmund also secured a sell-on clause as part of the agreement.
Adeyemi arrives at Camp Nou after four seasons in Germany, where he built a reputation as one of the Bundesliga’s fastest attackers. He can operate on either wing or through the middle, and Barcelona have described him as a versatile forward capable of playing across the front line.
Meanwhile, head coach Hansi Flick is already familiar with the player, having handed him his senior Germany debut back in 2021. That relationship is understood to have played a role in convincing the forward to make the switch.
His final season at Dortmund produced 10 goals and six assists in 39 appearances. However, the campaign was also marked by stalled contract talks and disciplinary issues, which eventually pushed both player and club toward a parting of ways. Despite that, Adeyemi still leaves the Ruhr valley with his stock high enough to attract one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Adeyemi was born in Munich to a Nigerian father and a Romanian mother, and he has never shied away from celebrating that heritage. His connection to Nigeria grew even stronger in 2023 after he credited his pace to eating the popular Nigerian dish fufu during an interview with CBS Sports Golazo, a comment that quickly went viral among football fans. The remark earned him the nickname “Nigeria’s fufu man,” a tag that has stuck with him ever since across Nigerian football circles.
Consequently, Adeyemi’s move to Barcelona is being followed closely by Nigerian supporters, who see it as another example of Nigerian bloodlines producing talent at the very top of European football. Although he plays for Germany at international level, his heritage continues to give Nigerian fans a personal stake in his career. His arrival at Barcelona therefore adds another name to the growing list of players with Nigerian roots making an impact on the biggest stages in world football.
Adeyemi is expected to link up with his new teammates for pre-season training as Barcelona continue preparing for the new campaign.
