Lookman’s fitness race gives Arsenal hope as Atlético sweat over key man

There’s a growing sense of uncertainty around Ademola Lookman in Madrid and it couldn’t have come at a worse time.

Just when the Nigerian forward was beginning to settle into life at Atlético Madrid, fitness concerns have suddenly thrown his momentum into doubt.

Lookman, who joined from Atalanta during the January window, wasted little time making his presence felt. His sharp movement, direct running, and eye for goal quickly made him one of the more exciting attacking options in Diego Simeone’s setup.

But football rarely stays smooth for long.

The 28-year-old picked up a muscle injury during Atlético’s Copa del Rey final clash earlier this month; a game where he was already making an impact before being forced off. Since then, he has missed key fixtures and has not fully rejoined the group in regular training.

Inside the club, there’s cautious optimism but no guarantees.

Simeone himself has tried to keep things measured, refusing to rule Lookman in or out completely. It’s the kind of situation where everything depends on late fitness tests, recovery speed, and how much risk the club is willing to take. And that’s where it gets interesting.

With a Champions League semi-final against Arsenal on the horizon, Lookman’s availability could shape the entire tie. He’s not just another squad player; he’s one of the few attackers in this Atlético side who can stretch defenses and create something out of nothing. Without him, the attack looks a bit more predictable. With him, there’s always a spark. For now, it’s a waiting game.

Training sessions, medical checks and last-minute decisions will determine whether he plays any part. But one thing is clear the closer it gets to matchday, the more attention shifts to his name. Because in games like this, players like Lookman don’t just participate, they decide them.
